<p>Former transport minister Chadchart Sittipunt emerged as the decisive winner after vote counting concluded on Sunday night in Bangkok&rsquo;s first gubernatorial election in almost a decade.</p>

<p>Four monarchy reform activists were again denied bail on 20 May, including Tantawan Tuatulanon, who has been on a hunger strike for the past 32&nbsp;days to demand the right to bail, while a protest caravan visited the Ratchadaphisek Criminal Court and the Bangkok Remand Prison to demand the release of 11 detained activists.</p>

<p>On 17 May, the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia (IDAHOT), activists held a rally for LGBTQ rights and called for marriage equality by rewriting the Constitutional Court&rsquo;s ruling on the Thai marriage law.</p>

<p>17 May 2022 marks the 30th anniversary of &ldquo;Black May&rdquo;, a popular uprising in 1992 that ended with a violent military crackdown and the fall of a military-led government. Plans to use the commemoration event to promote reconciliation are drawing more criticism than praise.</p>

<p>An inquest by the Songkhla Provincial Court found that Abdullah Isomuso, who was found unconscious in his cell while in military custody and died after a month in intensive care, found that his cause of death was oxygen deprivation but ruled that it was inconclusive whether he was assaulted.</p>

<p>The activist network Citizens for the Abolition of 112 submitted a petition to the US Embassy yesterday (10 May) calling for the US to pressure the Thai authorities to release detained activists and repeal the royal defamation law.</p>

<p>To celebrate Labour Day last&nbsp;Sunday (1 May), the Workers&rsquo; Union marched from Ratchaprasong Intersection to the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre to call for labour rights and fair treatment for workers in every sector.</p>

<p>The South Bangkok Criminal Court on Tuesday (3 May) ordered bail for monarchy reform activists Baipor and Netiporn to be revoked, saying that they violated their bail conditions by causing public disorder.</p>

<p>Student activist Sopon Surariddhidhamrong was arrested on Sunday night (1 May) on a royal defamation charge resulting from a speech he gave at a protest on 22 April 2022 and subsequently denied bail.</p>
