The inter-Korean summit is set to transform the international political landscape of East Asia. For the first time, South and North Koreas have agreed to overcome long years of mutual antagonism. They expressed their willingness to tackle difficult issues in their relationship that had over several decades prevented peace on the Korean peninsula. Among those difficult issues are denuclearization of the region and even a possible reunification in the future. The two countries were separated by the Korean War, which terminated in 1953.

How’s your arithmetic? In April this year, North Korea celebrated the 85th anniversary of the foundation of the Korean People’s Army.  And it was no secret. USA Today’s headline was ‘North Korea marks anniversary of its military with massive live-fire drill’.  Reuters ran with ‘South Korea on heightened alert as North Korea readies for army anniversary’.  The Daily Mirror: ‘Terrifying rally in North Korean parliament to mark army’s 85th anniversary as fears of war grow’.  And lots more on Google.

On 10 August 2015, North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Su Yong paid an official visit to Bangkok to boost bilateral ties. Among many issues, ironically, the two countries pledged to promote human rights and to enhance economic cooperation. They also discussed the issue of “nuclear” which might have made some Western nations disturbingly uncomfortable.

Thailand’s Foreign Ministry has sent a delegation to the North Korea and presented a gift to North Korea Leader Kim Jong Un to celebrate 40 years of bilateral ties.    According to the Korean Central News Agency of DPRK, the delegates, led by Deputy Minister Don Pramudwinai, arrived Pyongyang Tuesday and was welcomed with a reception, hosted by Democratic People's Republic of Korea Foreign Minister Ri Su Yong and Vice-Minister Ri Kil So at the Mansudae Assembly Hall.

The Education Minister and the North Korean Ambassador to Thailand mutually agreed that the education systems of both countries are rather similar and plan to develop ties by educational exchanges.   According to the  Office of the Minister Newsline, Admiral Narong Pipatanasai, the Thai Education Minister, his Deputy Teerakiat Jareonsettasin, and Permanent Secretary Suthasri Wongsamarn met with Mun Song Mo, the Ambassador of the People’s Democratic Republic of Korea on Friday at Government House.

The crisis on the Korean Peninsula is reaching its peak. North Korean leader, Kim Jong Un, has threatened to wage an attack on the United States and South Korea using “smaller, lighter and diversified nuclear weapons”. Shuttle diplomacy is now being conducted between key players in an attempt to alleviate the tense situation.

World's major human rights groups unite to campaign for investigation into North Korea's crimes against humannity The world’s three largest international human rights organizations, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH), along with 40 other organizations from around the world, today launched a major global campaign to seek the establishment of a United Nations (UN) Commission of Inquiry to investigate crimes against humanity in North Korea.
