Amid concerns that armed clashes along the Thailand-Cambodia border could disrupt the upcoming general election, Election Commission of Thailand (ECT) Secretary-General Sawang Boonmee said that the ECT can manage voting in the border provinces and the election will not be postponed.

The general election has been scheduled for 8 February 2026. Sawang said today (17 December) that elections in provinces along the Thailand-Cambodia border can still proceed despite voters in these areas being evacuated.

Sawang said that the ECT would like the election to proceed as planned and has ways of managing the poll in these provinces. If martial law is declared, he said, the ECT would have to look at the detail of the declaration first. However, he said that the ECT is sure it can manage without disruption.

Sawang has not disclosed details about how the poll will be organized, but said that there are ways of getting voters to the poll or bringing the poll to voters.
