Cartoon exhibition on human rights in ASEAN to launch on 3 May

The ASEAN Human Rights Cartoon Exhibition, an online exhibition fearing 37 cartoonists from 5 countries and focusing on human rights in ASEAN, will be launched on 3 May.

Led by Malaysian cartoonist Zulkiflee S.M. Anwar Ulhaque, known under his pen name Zunar, the exhibition brings together 74 pieces by 37 cartoonists from Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and Myanmar. The exhibition focuses on the human rights and freedom of expression in Southeast Asia, with each artist presenting works reflecting the situation in their respective home countries.

The exhibition will be held online on Craftora.com between 3 – 31 May.

From Thailand, the exhibition features works by Bangkok-based illustrator Erdy, illustrator and graphic designer Nuttawat Suphannakul or Wawawawin, illustrator PSSYPPL, and cartoonist Tanis Weerasakwong, or Sa-ard.

In addition to the main exhibition, there will also be a parallel exhibition showcasing works by the featured artists in solidarity with the pro-democracy protesters in Myanmar.

The exhibition will launch on 3 May at 13.00 Bangkok time and will feature speeches by four of the participating cartoonists: Tanis Weerasakwong, or Sa-ard, from Thailand, Angelo Lopez from the Philippines; Agoes Jumianto from Indonesia, and Salai Lailone from Myanmar, as well as speeches by Zunar, Human Rights Watch Asia Deputy Director Phil Robertson, and the Wahid Institute Director and Indonesian politician Yenny Wahid.

The exhibition will be open by Malaysian opposition leader and MP Anwar Ibrahim. The online event will be broadcast online on Craftora.com and by the exhibition’s supporting media partners: Prachatai English, tempo.co, and thevibes.com.

There will also be a forum each weekend, including a main forum on human rights on 8 May and a women cartoonists forum on 22 May, which will also be broadcast online.

Since 2007, Prachatai English has been covering underreported issues in Thailand, especially about democratization and human rights, despite the risk and pressure from the law and the authorities. However, with only 2 full-time reporters and increasing annual operating costs, keeping our work going is a challenge. Your support will ensure we stay a professional media source and be able to expand our team to meet the challenges and deliver timely and in-depth reporting.
