Preeyanant Losermwattana has been sued by a doctor for posting figures of patient fatalities and a picture of medical maltreatment as part of a campaign to support a bill to protect patients’ rights.
Preeyanant has received a police summons, dated 29 April, telling her to report to the police on 25 May to acknowledge charges made against her in Surin.
A medical doctor, Prachumporn Buncharoen, alleges that she disseminated false information by posting a message which says that about 65,000 Thai patients die every year, and a picture of a pair of scissors inside the throat of a child, an offence under Section 14 of the 2007 Computer Crimes Act which carries a jail term of up to 5 years or a fine of up to 100,000 baht, or both.
Preeyanant is an activist working with a group of patients who have campaigned to support a bill to protect patients’ rights. According to her, Prachumporn is one of doctors who oppose the bill.
