FORUM-ASIA strongly condemns the acid attack against Indonesian human rights defender Andrie Yunus, Deputy Coordinator of the Commission for the Disappeared and Victims of Violence (KontraS), in Jakarta on 12 March 2026.

The attack, which left Andrie with serious burns covering 24% of his body, appears to be a deliberate act of violence aimed at silencing critical voices and targeting those who work to defend human rights in Indonesia. The incident occurred shortly after Andrie Yunus finished recording a podcast at the office of the Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI) titled “Remilitarism and Judicial Review in Indonesia.” While riding his motorcycle in Central Jakarta, two unidentified perpetrators on a motorcycle approached and threw acid at him before fleeing the scene.

This incident reflects the continued risks faced by human rights defenders in Indonesia, particularly those who speak out on sensitive issues such as militarization, accountability, and the protection of civil liberties. Such acts of violence undermine the fundamental rights to freedom of expression and association.

Mary Aileen Diez-Bacalso, Executive Director of FORUM-ASIA, said “The attack against Andrie Yunus is deeply alarming and unacceptable. Human rights defenders play a vital role in promoting accountability and justice, and they must be able to carry out their work without fear of violence or reprisal. Andrie’s case should not be added to the long list of defenders being subjected to violent attacks while their perpetrators enjoy impunity.”

“As Indonesia currently holds the presidency of the Human Rights Council, it must prioritize the protection of human rights defenders. We urge the Indonesian authorities to conduct a prompt, thorough, and impartial investigation, ensure accountability for those responsible, and take concrete steps to guarantee the safety and protection of human rights defenders.”
