Students and lecturers at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok organised a march today (3 February) through its campus to call for people to vote in favour of a new constitution in the upcoming referendum.
Called by the Student Government of Chulalongkorn University (SGCU) and other student groups, students march around campus from the Faculty of Science to the Faculty of Political Science, stopping along the way at the market near Sala Prakieo building, the Faculty of Engineering, and the Faculty of Economics. Students and members of the public joined the march along with lecturers, including former Faculty of Law lecturer Tongthong Chandransu and Jessada Denduangboripant, a lecturer in the Department of Biology. The students also handed out pamphlets about the upcoming referendum and why a new constitution is needed.
The head of the SGCU’s Department of Social Empowerment and Volunteering, one of the organisers, said that the event was organised by students taking an assembly law class, as well as lecturers and a number of student groups with the goal of calling on the Chulalongkorn University community to vote in favour of a new constitution. She noted that all but one proposal to amend sections of the Constitution had been rejected, and said that voting yes in the referendum would mean a new constitution could be drafted that comes from the people. As a young person, she said that she would like Thailand to be a country where the public has a say in its development and where citizens are aware of their own rights.
