A banner was put up on an overpass in front of Chulalongkorn University on Thursday afternoon (4 September) to express solidarity with Indonesian protesters.
It carried the message “Thailand stands with the people of Indonesia. Justice for Affan, Muhammad, Sarinawati, Septinus, Saiful, Rusdamdiansyah, Rheza, Sumari, Andika, Iko, Budi,” the names of Indonesian protesters killed during police crackdowns on the ongoing protests. The protests began on 25 August in Jakarta after housing allowances for MPs were raised at a time when most people are facing economic problems. Among the dead was Affan Kurniawan, a 21-year-old food delivery rider, who was killed on 28 August after he was run over by a police vehicle chasing protesters in Jakarta. His death led to the escalation of protests in several cities across Indonesia.
On 31 August, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto agreed to cut the controversial allowance and suspend overseas work trips for MPs. However, the protests continued, and demonstrators are now demanding structural reforms.
Netizens across Southeast Asia have gone online to show support for Indonesian protesters through hashtags #SolidaritiIndonesia #KitaJiran #SEAblings. Some are ordering food and medical supplies on the Grab delivery application and asking riders not to deliver the goods but to share them among themselves and the protesters. Some are also donating to a legal aid fund for protesters.
