The National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) will launch an investigation into the leaked phone call between Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen, after a group of senators filed a complaint alleging a breach of ethics.
Thai PBS reported that on Monday (23 June), the NACC voted to accept the complaint and conduct a preliminary investigation, which would involve transcribing and translating the recording.
The complaint was filed by Gen Sawat Thatsana, Chair of the Senate Standing Committee on Armed Forces and State Security, and other senators. They alleged that Paetongtarn acted in violation of the Constitution and committed a breach of ethics by conceding to Hun Sen during the call and disgracing the army by saying that the army was an opponent of the government.
Paetongtarn has been under fire for the past week since the phone call was leaked. She is now facing several legal complaints, including one filed with the Constitutional Court seeking her removal for a breach of ethics and for her to be suspended while the case is under investigation. The Court has scheduled a meeting on 1 July, sooner than the original meeting dates of 8 and 15 July. It remains to be seen whether they will discuss the complaint against Paetongtarn at the meeting and whether she will be suspended.
