Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra is facing mounting pressure as legal complaints are being filed against her following the leaked call between her and Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen.

A recording of a phone call between Paetongtarn and Hun Sen over the recent border tension sparked nationwide uproar after it was leaked on Wednesday (18 June), compromising Paetongtarn’s position as a Prime Minister. Amidst calls for her to either resign or dissolve the House of Representatives, she is now facing at least 4 legal complaints aimed at removing her from office.

Ruangkrai Leekitwattana, a former Senator and member of the Palang Pracharath Party, filed a petition with the Election Commission today (19 June) seeking an investigation into whether Paetongtarn committed a breach of ethics under Sections 160 and 170 of the Constitution by speaking to Hun Sen and saying that the military is not on her side. Her predecessor, Srettha Thavisin, was dismissed under similar charges.

The Senate Standing Committee on Armed Forces and State Security, led by Pol Gen Sawat Thatsana, and other senators, urged Paetongtarn to resign. It also filed a petition with both the Constitutional Court and the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) today (19 June) seeking her removal.

Sawat said according to the leaked call, it was found that Paetongtarn conceded to Hun Sen and also disgraced the army by saying that the army was an opponent of the government.

Former senator Somchai Sawaengkarn, lawyer Nitithorn Lamlua, and academic Khomsan Pohkong also filed a criminal complaint against Paetongtarn with the Central Investigation Bureau, alleging that she violated Sections 120 - 128 of the Criminal Code, which concern external security. They said that parts of her conversation with Hun Sen affected national security- particularly the part where Paetongtarn said she would give Hun Sen whatever he wants.

The Standard reported that a serial petitioner Srisuwan Janya filed a petition against the Prime Minister with the NACC, claiming that she violated national security provisions in the Criminal Code and the Constitution regarding the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity given that the PM disclosed classified information to the enemy.

The recording between Paetongtarn and Cambodia’s Senate President Hun Sen, was leaked on Wednesday (18 June) and promptly went viral on social media in both Cambodia and Thailand. Both sides admitted that the audio was authentic.

The conversation discussed ways to ease tensions at the border. However, the Thai PM mentioned the domestic pressure she is facing from the military, saying the 2nd Army Region was the opponent of the government. She said she did not want Hun Sen to listen to them.

The leaked phone call put Paetongtarn under fire as netizens began calling her a traitor and showing their support for the military. In addition, several parties have called on her to either resign or dissolve the House of Representatives.

The Paetongtarn administration was hit by another blow as the Bhumjaithai Party, which has 69 MPs, announced last night (18 June) that it is withdrawing from the government coalition, leaving the government a razor-thin majority in parliament.
