Former MP Sereepisuth sentenced to jail for defamation

Former leader of the Thai Liberal Party, Sereepisuth Temeeyaves, has been sentenced to one year in prison for defamation after accusing the deputy leader of the Palang Pracharat Party, Paiboon Nititawan, of corruption.

On 21 November, Matichon reported that the court found Sereepisuth committed defamation during a 20 October 2021 interview he gave on YouTube channel in which he accused Paiboon of corruption. The complaint was filed by Paiboon himself.

The court found that the evidence presented by the former MP was not sufficient to counter the plaintiff’s defence. He was sentenced to one year in prison and fined 100,000 baht. Due to his cooperative testimony, the sentence was reduced to eight months and he was fined 66,666.66 baht.

As Sereepisuth has never been imprisoned, he was subsequently granted a two-year parole.
