Detained political activist Ekkachai Hongkangwan has been transferred to the Corrections Hospital due to a high fever. Upon examination, he was found to have abnormal kidney function and leukocytosis.

On 10 September, Thai Lawyers for Human Rights (TLHR) reported that Ekkachai Hongkangwan, who was sentenced to one year in prison for exposing his sex life behind bars, was admitted to the hospital last Friday due to a high fever and jaundice.

According to a TLHR update, his fever has subsided but examining doctors found that he has abnormal kidney function and leukocytosis.

Ekkachai remains hospitalised and is receiving medication and saline solution. It is expected that he will undergo another examination this week.

On 11 September, Nutthida Meewangpla, a former volunteer nurse who witnessed the massacre of red-shirt protester in 2010, stated that Ekkachai remains conscious but is still jaundiced and is easily tired. Further tests are required to determine the underlying disease.

A 48-year-old anti-junta activist, Ekkachai was previously jailed for violating the royal defamation law by selling CDs containing an Australian Broadcasting Corporation documentary about the then Crown Prince and Wikileaks documents in 2011. He was released in November 2015.

Ekkachai has been physically assaulted seven times for opposing people in power. There have also been two arson attacks on his car.

He was sentenced to one year in prison for a computer-related crime related to publicly disclosing his sex life behind bars in 2017. In 2018, Pol Maj Ekkaphon Saeng-arun filed a complaint against Ekkachai for uploading pornographic content into a computer system. Ekkachai has been in the Bangkok Remand Prison since 6 September 2023 and is expected to be released in February 2024.
