The Thai-Myanmar Border Command Centre has announced that the armed conflict in Myanmar has forced 4,878 Myanmar refugees to enter Thailand, while the Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) continuously deploys surveillance aircraft to prevent any violation of Thai territorial airspace.

On 29 June 2023, The Reporters reported that according to the Thai-Myanmar Border Command Centre’s press release of 28 June 2023, clashes between the Myanmar military and anti-government forces are continuing along the border areas opposite Mae Sariang and Khun Yuam districts of Mae Hong Son Province. As a result, 4,878 Myanmar refugees have crossed into Thailand and are staying in four temporary shelters in Mae Hong Son Province, three in Mae Sariang District, and the other in Khun Yuam District.

The Naresuan Force and Mae Hong Son’s provincial administration have been closely monitoring the situation on the Myanmar side to prepare for any potential impact on the safety of Thai citizens' lives and properties. The RTAF has conducted continuous air surveillance and is ready to deploy aircraft if Thai airspace is violated.

The Thai-Myanmar Border Command Centre in Mae Hong Son Province is collaborating with relevant agencies in ensuring security and providing humanitarian assistance to displaced Myanmar civilians based on human rights principles. The Red Cross in Mae Sariang and Khun Yuam is accepting government, private and local donations. Donation points are available at the Mae Sariang District Office and the Khun Yuam District Office, which are open every day including public holidays.

On 27 June 2023, the Mae Sariang District Chief and heads of government agencies held a meeting to discuss the operational guidelines for dealing with the displaced Myanmar civilians in the areas of Sao Hin and Mae Khong, Mae Sariang District.

In a repeat of previous operations to provide temporary shelter at Ban Sao Hin, Mae Sariang District, on 28 June 2023, members of the Territorial Defence Volunteer Corps, along with police officers and village security personnel, set up checkpoints at the entry and exit points of the temporary shelter. Regular daily meetings were held to monitor the situation.

This was also carried out at Ban Phakhae, Khun Yuam District, and Ban Unu, Mae Sariang District, where additional accommodation and garbage pits were constructed.

The Thai Border Command Centre stated that Thailand is not a party to the conflicts occurring in the areas opposite Mae Hong Son Province and that Thailand does not support either side and will not allow its territory to be used as a support area for any party.

The Centre also requested cooperation from the public in refraining from travelling to the affected areas in order to ensure the safety of lives and properties. The media and all relevant parties are also requested to verify information before disseminating it to the public, as false information can create unrest and fear among the local population. The public can obtain accurate information from the Centre’s daily press briefings.
