<p>According to ASTV-Manager, National Human Rights Commissioner Paiboon Varahapaitoon says that putting the photos of individuals on flip-flops for sale was not proper, because Thai society places importance on hierarchy and decency, as well as human dignity which is guaranteed in the constitution.&nbsp; Such an act cannot be allowed, no matter whether the individuals in the photos are public figures or ordinary people, as it violates the rights of others.</p>
<p>A new book by Vimolphun Peetathawatchai was launched last week entitled <em>Ek Kasattra Tai Rattadhammanoon</em> (translated as &lsquo;The Great Constitutional Monarch&rsquo; by the Bangkok Post, or literally &lsquo;Unique King under the Constitution&rsquo;).&nbsp; Matichon has published a couple of excerpts from the book about the death of King Ananda, dealing with what is claimed to be newly discovered evidence.&nbsp; Dom Dantrakul, son of the late prolific writer Suphoj Dantrakul, who was a devoted defender of Pridi Banomyong and the 1932 revolution, has written an article to refute Vimolphun on the issue.</p>

<p>Khon Kaen-based scholar David Streckfuss recently completed a seminal book on lese majeste law entitled &ldquo;Truth on Trial in Thailand: Defamation, treason, and lese-majeste&rdquo; published by Routledge. He answered questions by Pravit Rojanaphruk about lese majeste law and more. Excerpts:&nbsp;&nbsp; </p> <p><strong>1) Many people who support lese majeste law say Thailand and its monarchy is unique thus the law is needed. What's your view?</strong></p>
<p>A Sub-Committee of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission has met with senior security officers to gather information on the April-May crackdowns on the red shirts.&nbsp; More meetings will be held next month.&nbsp; The CRES spokesperson insists that the security forces adhered to the law and international practice during the crackdowns, and says that the 91 deaths are being exploited and distorted.</p>

<p>According to Matichon, Pol Lt Col Chachpong Pongsuwan, investigator at Khon Kaen Police Station, said that a l&egrave;se majest&eacute; charge had been lodged against Chiranuch Premchaiporn since 2008. The case has been vetted by the Provincial Police Board Region 4, and is now being prosecuted by a department of the National Police Bureau. A summons is not necessary in this case because the offence carries a severe penalty.</p>
<p>The charges against Chiranuch were made by the Superintendent of Khon Kaen Police who alleged that she, as website administrator, and website users violated Sections 14 and 15 of the 2007 Computer Crimes Act and Section 112 of the Criminal Code (l&egrave;se majest&eacute;) for offensive comments made on the website on 27 April 2009.</p> <p><strong><em>(Correction: the charges were made by Sunimit Jirasuk, a local businessman in Khon Kaen, for comments on Prachatai in April 2008 about <a href="http://www.prachatai.com/english/node/620">Chotisak Onsoong</a>.)</em></strong></p>
<p>Chiranuch Premchaiporn was detained by immigration police at Suvarnabhumi Airport at 2.30 pm today upon arrival from a trip to the Internet at Liberty 2010 Conference in Hungary.&nbsp; The police showed an arrest warrant issued by Khon Kaen Provincial Court, and she will probably be sent to the province today.&nbsp; Currently, the charges are not clear.</p>
