It was the first time a Czech mole entertained the French Institute in Yangon. The mole, the iconic character of the Czech animation that are popular worldwide, played a role of decoy in the military-dominant Burma, which is now more widely called Myanmar, to trick the military intelligence. It was the year 2005, when the military regime was so powerful that it seemed nothing would work, whether it was the sanction from the West or the UN pressure.

Migrant workers from Myanmar have filed a lawsuit against Betagro, a major food conglomerate, accusing the company of serious violations of labour rights. Last Friday, 2 September 2016, 14 migrant workers from Myanmar employed in one of Betagro’s subsidiary chicken farms in Lopburi Province filed a lawsuit against the company to the 1st Region Labour Court in Saraburi Province, the BBC Thai reported.

The United States government should keep in place sanctions on Burma to deter the Burmese military from derailing democratic reforms, Human Rights Watch said today. Human Rights Watch has learned that the Obama administration plans to announce the lifting of key sanctions during Burmese leader Aung San Suu Kyi’s visit to Washington, DC, which begins on September 14, 2016.

Shan community groups has held a press conference in Bangkok today to raise concerns about secretive preparation to dam the Salween river in war-torn northern Shan State to export hydropower to China. Over the past few months China’s state-owned Hydrochina has been moving ahead with plans to build the 1,200 megawatt Naung Pha dam in one of Shan State’s most contested areas, where there is ongoing fighting between the Burma Army and ethnic armed groups west of the dam site and a tenuous ceasefire with the heavily armed United Wa State Army to the east.

Thai employers are seriously abusing migrant workers from Myanmar on chicken farms, according to the Migrant Worker Rights Network (MWRN). At around 11 am on Thursday, 7 July 2016, staff of the MWRN and representatives of 14 migrant workers from Myanmar who had been employed on a chicken farm in Lopburi Province belonging to Betagro Company, a large agricultural and food products conglomerate in Thailand, submitted a letter to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).

After being banned in Myanmar a month ago, the film ‘Twilight Over Burma’ has also been banned from an upcoming film festival in Bangkok. The festival organizers said the film might endanger Thailand-Myanmar relations.   On Wednesday, 6 July 2016, Matichon Online reported that ‘Twilight Over Burma’, the love story of an ethnic Shan prince and an Austrian woman during a period of political unrest in Myanmar, was removed from the 4th Thailand International Film Destination Festival 2016.

The new Burmese government, led by the National League for Democracy (NLD), has taken a major step in releasing approximately 200 political prisoners and detainees, Human Rights Watch said today. It has also pledged to release remaining political prisoners or have their politically motivated charges dropped by the end of April 2016.
