Following the military coup in Myanmar on Monday morning (1 February), Amnesty International, ASEAN Parliamentarians for Human Rights (APHR), the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH), and the Asian Forum for Human Rights and Development (FORUM-ASIA) have all issued statements of concern about the coup and the arrest of politicians and activists.

Amnesty International, the International Commission of Jurists, Human Rights Watch, the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH), Dignity International, and Article 19 welcome the first official consultation between ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) and civil society organisations (CSOs) on the ASEAN Human Rights Declaration (AHRD), which is due to take place in Kuala Lumpur on June 22, 2012 at the Ritz Carlton Hotel.

Paris-Bangkok, 9 May 2012. The International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) and its Thai member organization, Union for Civil Liberty (UCL), are deeply saddened by the death of Mr. Amphon Tangnoppakhun, who was convicted on 23 November 2011 and harshly sentenced to 20 years in prison. He was accused of sending four text messages deemed offensive to the Queen of Thailand to a personal assistant of the Prime Minister in 2010, in violation of Article 112 of the Criminal Code and the Computer-related Crimes Act of 2007. He had insisted on his innocence throughout his trial.

The international community must press for urgent steps to meet these benchmarks and to initiate substantive reforms without delay.

Paris, 29 March 2012. The International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) and the World Coalition Against the Death Penalty (WCADP) express their outrage at the hanging of three inmates this morning in prisons in Tokyo, Hiroshima and Fukuoka. These executions are the first since July 2010 and occurred less than three months after the new Justice Minister Toshio Ogawa took office. The year 2011 had been the first without any execution since 1993.

Paris-Bangkok, 6 March 2012. The ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) will meet in Jakarta this week to continue the drafting of a new human rights instrument, the ASEAN Human Rights Declaration (AHRD). Up to now, this drafting process has been characterized by opacity, absence of broad engagement with civil society, and fears that this declaration may contradict international human rights standards. The eventual text is expected to be adopted by ASEAN leaders at the Summit in November 2012 in Phnom Penh.

Geneva-Paris-Bangkok, 27 February 2012 - Although Laos has become a State party to the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD) since 1974, ethnic minority groups in the country continue to face discrimination and their basic rights and freedoms are subject to a range of limitations that are incompatible with Laos’ obligations under international law, said the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) and its member league the Lao Movement for Human Rights (MLDH).

The first full-fledged human rights dialogue of the European Union with Viet Nam needs to be accompanied with the release of all human rights defenders currently imprisoned, in detention, or under house arrest, said the Vietnam Committee on Human Rights (VCHR) and the Observatory for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders, a joint programme of the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) and the World Organisation Against Torture (OMCT).

Paris-Bangkok, 6 January 2012 - The Burmese government is continuing its public relations game which has delivered little substantive change by refusing to honor previous promises to release all political prisoners, said the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) and the Alternative ASEAN Network on Burma (Altsean-Burma). This week it declared an “amnesty” that comprised the release of only a handful of political prisoners and prison term reductions that did not significantly bring most prisoners closer to freedom from arbitrary detention.

The release this week of an estimated 220 political prisoners in Burma comes as a relief to their families and colleagues, but again fall far short of a key benchmark for reconciliation and genuine transition to democracy, namely the unconditional and immediate release of all remaining political prisoners and the cessation of military attacks on civilians, said the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) and its member organization the Alternative ASEAN Network on Burma (Altsean-Burma) today.
