Facing royal defamation charges for singing a modified version of the royal anthem at a protest in January 2021, Chaiamorn “Ammy” Kaewwiboonpan, lead singer of The Bottom Blues pop band, was recently acquitted. However, another activist charged because of the protest, Promsorn, was sentenced to 2 years in prison without parole before being granted bail.

Yesterday (22 November), the Criminal Court revoked bail for student activist Panusaya Sithijirawattanakul on charges arising from her participation in the 19 – 20 September 2020 protest.

The Criminal Court has approved bail requests for activist Parit Chiwarak and singer Chaiamorn Kaewwiboonpan. The request for Panupong Jadnok was delayed until the next Covid-19 test is declared.

Four people currently facing royal defamation charges and detained pending trial have been granted bail: activists Jatupat Boonpattararaksa and Somyot Prueksakasemsuk, and two other people who were previously detained at prisons in Chiang Mai.

Chaiamorn ‘Ammy’ Kaewwiboonpan, lead singer of the pop band The Bottom Blues, is among 3 people against whom the police have requested an arrest warrant for lèse majesté, arson and computer crimes over the burning of a King Rama X big portrait in front of Klong Prem Central prison on the night of 27 February.

Police arrested activists who tried to establish a camp close to the Democracy Monument on 13 October, a day prior to the appointed date for a big anti-dictatorship protest. 13 October is also the anniversary of the death of King Rama IX.
