The Attorney General’s Office has decided to drop a royal defamation charge filed against activist Benja Apan over a speech given during a protest in September 2021 on the grounds that she was criticizing the government and did not intend to defame the monarchy.

Three activists have been found guilty of royal defamation and given suspended sentences over speeches given at a protest on 24 June 2021, after a judge ruled that defaming deceased kings also constituted an offence under the royal defamation law.

The Thanyaburi Provincial Court on Tuesday (25 June) dismissed charges filed against activists Benja Apan and Pimchanok Jirataiyanon for raising a red flag with the number “112” on it during a protest in January 2021.  However, they were fined for taking the national flag down from the pole before 18.00.

Student activist Benja Apan has been sentenced to prison with a two-year suspension for a royal defamation charge resulting from a speech she gave during a protest on 10 August 2021.

The Ratchadapisek Criminal Court has found three activists guilty of insult of court and sentenced them to prison for speeches given during a protest in April 2021 to demand the release of political prisoners.

Another royal defamation complaint has been filed against student activist Benja Apan for a speech given during a protest on 3 September 2021.
