The session is moderated by Associate Professor Verita Sriratana, Ph.D., Department of English, Faculty of Arts, Chulalongkorn University & Visiting Research Fellow in Human Rights at the Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law, Lund University.

About the Speaker

Teun A. van Dijk is the co-founder of Critical Discourse Analysis. Director of the Centre of Discourse Studies, Teun A. van Dijk was professor of discourse studies at the University of Amsterdam until 2004, and is at present professor at Pompeu Fabra University, Barcelona. After earlier work on generative poetics, text grammar, and the psychology of text processing, his work since 1980 takes a more critical perspective and deals with discursive racism, news in the press, ideology, knowledge and context.

He is the author of several books in most of these areas, and he edited ‘The Handbook of Discourse Analysis’ (4 vols, 1985) the introductory book ‘Discourse Studies’ (2nd edition, 2011) as well as the reader ‘The Study of Discourse’ (5 vols., 2007). He founded 6 international journals, ‘Poetics’, ‘Text’ (now ‘Text & Talk’), ‘Discourse & Society’, ‘Discourse Studies’, ‘Discourse & Communication’ and the internet journal in Spanish ‘Discurso & Sociedad’ (www.dissoc.org). About the Moderator

Verita Sriratana is Associate Professor of Literary Studies at the Department of English, Faculty of Arts, Chulalongkorn University. She is currently Visiting Research Fellow in Human Rights at the Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law (RWI), Lund University, Sweden, where she researches on the topic of offline and online gender-based violence against female activists in Thailand’s current pro-democracy movement as well as the movement's feminist and intersectional retaliation against patriarchal epistemic violence. Her publications span modernist literature, gender studies, necropolitics, postcolonialism and Central & Eastern European Studies.

Since 2007, Prachatai English has been covering underreported issues in Thailand, especially about democratization and human rights, despite the risk and pressure from the law and the authorities. However, with only 2 full-time reporters and increasing annual operating costs, keeping our work going is a challenge.
