Bangkok Military Court on Thursday sentenced a man to six months in jail and a fine of 10,000 baht for protesting against the coup. In another case, the Court sentenced a provincial red-shirt leader to a year in jail because he did not report as ordered by the junta.
Surasit Nuamsiri was arrested when he was protesting against the coup at Siam Paragon shopping mall on 8 June and was later detained at the Crime Suppression Division.
The court found him guilty of violating martial law and sentenced him to six months in jail and a fine of 10,000 baht. However, the sentence was reduced to six months in jail and a fine of 5,000 baht because he pleaded guilty.
The court said since Surasit had no criminal record, the sentence was suspended for two years to allow the defendant to become a good person.
Also on Thursday, Bangkok Military Court found Samran Saichana, a businessman and red-shirt leader in central Lopburi province, guilty of violating the junta’s National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) Order No. 14/2014, which told him to report on 8 June. Samran later turned himself in on 11 June.
The court sentenced him to one year in jail and a fine of 20,000 baht. However, since the defendant pleaded guilty, the jail term and the fine were halved and suspended for two years.
