Migrant workers in Samut Sakhon participate in celebrating the King’s birthday – December 5

The Cross Cultural Foundation today on behalf of the networks of organizations working on migrant issues has sent a thank you letter to Mr. Veerayut Iam-ampa, the Samut Sakhon governor, in response to his official announcement dated November 28. The governor's announcement withdraws an earlier decision preventing migrant workers' from participating in cultural activities. In the November 28th announcement, the governor stated that Samut Sakhon province does not bar these activities.

The Cross Cultural Foundation welcomes the governor's leadership on this issue following a round-table discussion on November 21 with representatives from networks of organizations working on migrant issues.

This announcement was met with positive feedback from migrant communities in Samut Sakhon province. The workers are able to join different religious rites and cultural activities. It came at an opportune time as many migrant communities prepare to mark the King's 80th Birthday celebrations. The King's birthday celebrations showcase the respect and love for the king shared by both the Thai and migrant communities.

In the morning, both the local Thais and migrant workers will gather together to clean up the community, plant trees and raise awareness for the environment.

In the evening, there will be fireworks and performances. Students, both Thai and migrant, from Wat Sirimongkol will perform various classical dancing shows.

On December 26, the Mon and Burmese migrant workers together with the head of the community will host an ordination rite of 50 people. The rite will take place at Wat Bang Pai Tia for the auspicious celebration.

The Migrant Working Group echoes the appreciation for the governor's announces and encourages Mr. Veerayut Iam-ampa to find solutions that address other issues discussed and agreed at the November 21 meeting, for example, the banning on illicit businesses, illegal labors, and gangs.

The networks of organizations working on migrant issues seek policy solutions with all key stakeholders, in particular the provincial officials and urges the governor to begin the process immediately.
