Following Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s recent poor health treatment care of the Burmese regime, the national league for democracy leader and symbol of hope for the Burmese people was unjustly charged on May 14, 2009 with breaching the terms of her detention which is likely to result in a 3-5 years prison sentence merely because an unwelcome visit made by an American.

Furthermore two other people besides ASSK also face trial; her two female companions namely Khin Khin Win and Win Ma Ma. Her personal physician was held for two weeks by the regime’s security forces and only released yesterday.

More significantly, This outrageous action interpreted as the junta’s way of keeping Aung San Suu Kyi out of the way during the 2010 elections has to be condemned by international communities.

Instead of completely releasing her from house arrest (more than 13 years in detention) which is widely known to be unconstitutional and violates many UN provisions on human rights, the SPDC action completely ignores the many calls for democratic change from the international community as well as the Human Rights Charter of ASEAN.

ASEAN, China, Russia India must now decide whether they will now act in favour of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and the people of Burma or to continue backing the thieving and murderous SPDC which has reduced Burma to one of the most destitute, corrupt and lawless countries on this earth today.

We call on the UN Secretary General, certain veto-prone UNSC members, ASEAN nations, India and others to join the vast majority of governments around the world in condemning the SPDC for its utterly despicable treatment of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.

We call on ASEAN, China, Russia, India and all the other countries to use whatever necessary means to ensure

* An immediate release Aung San Suu Kyi and thousands of political prisoners
* SPDC undertake a comprehensive and fully inclusive discussion process involving all interested groups and parties
* The comprehensive review and amend the 2008 constitution with the objective of ensuring full democracy for all Burma’s people.

We demand that the Thai government takes the lead in ASEAN and work with the international communities to pressurize the SPDC to release Aung San Suu Kyi immediately.

The SPDC is busy doing its worst. We say to ASEAN, China, Russia, India and others, “the world is watching and waiting for your next move…”
