The activist group Socialist Workers Thailand (SWT) staged a protest on Saturday (13 December) in front of the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre to demand an end to armed clashes along the Thailand-Cambodia border.

SWT member Saowalak Phongam said that the group wanted to show that there are Thais who stand against war. While war benefits the military in both countries, she said, it does not benefit the majority of citizens.

Saowalak noted that, while there has been periodical tension along the border, there has never been such a prolonged conflict. She believes that the military is exploiting the rising nationalism so that it could still interfere with politics after it became less popular following the 2023 general election.

Saowalak called on the caretaker Cabinet to enter negotiation about the border conflict, and on every political party to demand an end to armed conflict.

After the protest at the BACC, the group went to the Srinakharinwirot University, where the People’s Party was holding an event, to continue their campaign.
