
24 years, 33 months, and 20 days is the total prison sentence now faced by human rights lawyer and activist Anon Nampa.
For his activism during the 2020 – 2022 pro-democracy protests, Anon was charged with 14 counts of royal defamation. The courts have delivered verdicts against him for 9 counts of the charge. For royal defamation charges alone, he is facing 24 years, 16 months, and 20 days in prison.
- For writing and posting a letter to King Vajiralongkorn to his public Facebook account on 8 November 2022, sentenced to 3 years in prison, reduced to 2 years.
- For giving a speech at the 3 August 2021 “Harry Potter 2” protest, sentenced to 3 years in prison, reduced to 2 years and 20 days.
- For making 2 posts on Facebook criticizing the King’s exercise of power, sentenced to 6 years in prison, reduced to 4 years.
- For a speech given during the 14 October 2020 protest, sentenced to 4 years in prison.
- For making 3 posts on Facebook in January 2021 criticizing the use of the royal defamation law against critics of the monarchy and calling for monarchy reform, sentenced to 4 years in prison.
- For giving a speech at the 23 November 2020 protest at Chiang Mai University, sentenced to 3 years in prison, reduced to 2 years.
- For giving a speech at the 21 December 2020 in front of the Bang Khen Police Station, sentenced to 3 years in prison, reduced to 2 years.
- For giving a speech at the 3 August 2020 “Harry Potter” protest at the Democracy Monument, sentenced to 4 years in prison, reduced to 2 years and 8 months.
- For giving a speech at the 2 December 2020 protest at the Ladphrao Intersection, sentenced to 4 years in prison, reduced to 2 years and 8 months.
He is also facing other charges, for which he is facing a total of 17 months in prison.
- A sedition charge for giving a speech calling for monarchy reform at the 10 August 2020 at Thammasat University, sentenced to 1 year in prison, reduced to 9 months.
- A contempt of court charge filed after he took off his shirt in the courtroom to protest the Court’s refusal to summon evidence and subsequent decision to try him in secret, sentenced to 6 months in prison.
- A violation of the Emergency Decree charge for participation in the 27 November 2020 protest at the Ladphrao Intersection, sentenced to 2 months in prison.
A verdict has yet to be reached in 4 of the remaining counts of royal defamation, including one filed against him for giving a speech at the 17 November 2020 protest in front of parliament, the trial for which has been scheduled for 8 July. He was also charged with royal defamation for giving a speech at the 29 July 2020 protest at Tha Phae gate in Chiang Mai, for which the public prosecutor has yet to rule whether to indict him.
Anon has been detained pending appeal at the Bangkok Remand Prison since 26 September 2023. He has always maintained during his trials that he was criticizing a public figure and the issues he raised are in the interest of the public. Meanwhile, the Court has been refusing to summon evidence in some of the cases against him, such as documents concerning the monarchy’s spending, claiming that they were not necessary.
