9 pro-democracy activists have been sentenced to two years and ten months in prison for trespassing and other charges resulting from a 2023 protest they staged in front of the Samranrat Police Station to demand the release of a 15-year-old activist. They were later allowed bail.
According to Thai Lawyers for Human Rights, Sittichai Prasai, Natthaphon Lekyaem, Suttawee Soikham, Noppasin Treelayapewat, Thiraphat Pradapkaeo, Jirapas Koram, Ronnakorn Hangchaicharoen, Tantawan Tuatulanon, and Orawan Phuphong were charged following the 10 May 2023 protest at Samranrat Police Station to demand the release of 15-year-old activist Thanalop Phalanchai.
The protest began after police filed additional charges against Thanalop, who is now detained at the Ban Pranee Juvenile Vocational Training Centre for Girls in Nakhon Pathom pending trial on a royal defamation charge.
During the protest, activists threw red paint and coloured smoke flares at the police station and a spirit shrine in front of the building. They also asked that Pol Col Thotsaphon Amphaiphiphatkun, superintendent of Samranrat Police Station, explain why officers visited Thanalop to notify her of her charges without telling her guardian and further demanded the 15-year-old's release, saying that it is within the power of the police and courts to let her go so she could return to school.
A minor clash occurred after activist Tantawan approached the station door to demand that a police representative come out to speak to the media. Activists tried to push through a police barrier but were forced back. A glass door at the station was broken during the clash.
They were arrested on the same day and charged with trespassing, obstructing police officers, and damaging public and private property. They were granted bail during the trial with 250,000 baht each as security.
On Monday (28 April), all nine activists were found guilty of trespassing, obstructing the police, property damage, and failing to abide by an official order.
The Court sentenced them to two years and ten months in prison without suspension. On the same day, eight of them were granted bail with 150,000 baht each as security, except for Natthaphon, who is currently being detained for other charges.
