Following discussions on Tuesday (18 June), the Constitutional Court will reconvene on 3 July to discuss the petition filed by the Election Commission of Thailand (ECT) seeking the dissolution of the Move Forward Party (MFP).

The Court has ordered relevant persons to submit their testimonies or opinions within 7 days of receiving a court notification and has scheduled an evidence examination for 9 July. It also ordered evidence used in the petition on MFP’s campaign to amend the royal defamation law to be added to the case.

The ECT filed the petition after the Constitutional Court ruled on 31 January that campaigns put forward by the MFP and its former leader Pita Limjaroenrat to amend the royal defamation law are treasonous.

It is unclear from the Court’s press release whether there will be a hearing, but MFP is still hoping for one. Former MFP party leader Pita Limjaroenrat, now Chair of the party’s consultant board, told The Reporters that he is not sure whether a witness examination will take place after evidence examination. He said that the party has prepared witnesses who are legal experts and said he hopes that it will be given an opportunity to defend itself. He remains confident that the party can refute the charges that have been made against it.

Meanwhile, BBC Thai,  citing an anonymous MFP source, reports that the party has prepared expert witnesses.  Party members are reportedly also ready to testify on their election campaign and why party members posted bail for activists charged with royal defamation. The court may require witnesses to submit testimonies in writing, however.
