The monitoring and harassment of activists and citizens by state officials has reportedly continued after the regime change.  Thai Lawyers for Human Rights (TLHR) documented 23 cases in September and October.

The most common trend, some 12 cases, involved individuals being followed to their homes, receiving phone calls, or being closely monitored when the Prime Minister or a royal family member visited the area.

After the establishment of the Pheu Thai Party (PTP) coalition government, security officials have continued the Prayut government’s policy of harassing citizens and activists known for engaging in acts of political expressions, especially during visits by important figures to various provinces.

The cases noted by TLHR can be categorised as follows:

  1. Being followed by state officers during visits by important figures, such as Prime Minister Srettha (12 cases).
  2. Being followed due to political activities (3 cases).
  3. Being followed and harassed for expressing opinions about the monarchy (3 cases).
  4. Being followed and harassed during activities organised by opposition parties (2 cases).
  5. Cases related to the Assembly of the Poor (2 cases).
  6. Cases with unclear causes (1 case).

TLHR reports that since the beginning of 2023, there have been no fewer than 123 cases involving the surveillance and harassment of citizens, affecting freedom of expression and privacy. In some instances, certain activists have been followed multiple times during significant events or during visits by important figures to various areas.
