The Move Forward Party (MFP) has submitted an amnesty bill for those involved in political activities since 2006, with the hope of restoring the lives of victims of lawfare.

On 5 October 2023, MFP leader Chaithawat Tulathon, along with party MPs, submitted an amnesty bill for those who have been prosecuted in connection with political demonstrations and political expression.

Chaithawat explained that the bill was written in the context of the ongoing political conflicts that have persisted since the People's Alliance for Democracy’s first protested against then PM Thaksin Shinawatra’s administration in 2006. Thousands of people involved in political dissent have been faced charges, some minor but many serious, involving national security, and legal proceedings have continued up to the present.

The party leader said the MFP believes that the prosecution of a large number of people makes it difficult for Thai society to regain peace. He said that the use of lawfare against the people must stop and those who have faced legal punishment for expressing their political opinions during this period should be exonerated.

Chaithawat remarked that the amnesty bill can be achieved if political parties are determined to push for it. The MFP will take this opportunity to discuss with other parties, as well as people from various backgrounds who have had conflicts in the past. The party welcomed other drafts from different parties to be considered along with its draft.

“Even though we, the people, may not have all the same political opinions, I believe that all groups of people express their political views and disagree with each other based on their desire to push for a better society according to their own beliefs. Therefore, we believe that ending prosecutions and lawfare against the people, regardless of sides, is the best way out”, said Chaithawat.

He added that it is the best way to enable people to engage in democratic processes peacefully and work together to seek a new consensus for Thai society.
