Interior Minister orders governors to compile lists of ‘influential individuals’

Anutin Charnvirakul, Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister, has instructed all 77 provincial governors to compile lists of ‘influential individuals’ in their respective provinces for screening purpose to improve public safety.

The directive comes in response to an incident in Nakhon Prathom Province, where an associate of Praween Chanklai, an influential figure, murdered a police officer who declined to fulfil a request that he arrange for one of Praween’s relatives to receive special treatment.

Praween attempted to convince Highway Police Officer Pol Maj Siwakorn Saibua to facilitate a transfer for one of his relatives within the highway patrol force. When the officer declined, Praween's assistant shot him moments later.  The officer later succumbed to his injuries. The gunman was subsequently killed in a police shootout.

Following a meeting with governors from all 77 provinces to discuss the ministry's important initiatives, the Interior Minister and Deputy PM stated in an interview that they have requested the compilation of lists of influential individuals. Provincial governors and the Ministry of Interior are collaborating to screen individuals and ensure public safety.

During the meeting, the minister emphasised that the work of the Ministry must align with the principles of 'keeping pace with the world, staying up-to-date, and being responsive.'

'[We] must harness technology to assist the public in product development and diversify trade channels. We need to promote tourism development, both in major cities and secondary towns, to reduce risks for agricultural professionals,' he explained."
