Chonlanan Srikaew has announced his resignation as the head of the Pheu Thai Party (PTP) on Wedsnesday, fulfilling his pledge to the public that he would step down from the position should the PTP form an alliance with the Palang Pracharat Party (PPP) or engage in any agreements with Prawit Wongsuwon.
Chonlanan made this commitment during a televised debate on April 28 in Chiang Mai province, where he stated his intention to resign if the party's management committee decided to establish a coalition government with the PPP or Pravit, the de-facto leader of the party.
The former leader emphasised that with the goal of establishing a PTP-led government having been achieved, he is now prepared to fulfil his earlier commitment to step down from his position.
According to PTP’s regulations, when a party leader resigns, all remaining members of the party's management committee are required to resign from their positions and continue their roles in an interim capacity. A general assembly will be convened within 60 days to elect a new set of management committee members.
The media reported that Chonlanan, a PTP MP and a licensed Preventive Medicine physician, is allegedly being considered for the role of the next Minister of Health.
Following the PTP's announcement of its partnership with the PPP, the public urged Chonlanan to honour his promise, sparking various campaigns on social media to exert pressure, including the widely used hashtag #What time will Chonlanan resign? (ชลน่านลาออกกี่โมง ) on Twitter/X.
