UN Human Rights Chief condemns military coup and urges prompt restoration of rule of law in Thailand
<p>GENEVA (23 May 2014) – UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay on Friday urged Thailand to “ensure respect for human rights and a prompt restoration of the rule of law in the country.”</p>
<p>“My office has been closely monitoring the political turbulence in Thailand for the last five months and I am deeply concerned about the forcible replacement of an elected Government, the imposition of martial law, the suspension of the constitution and the emergency measures that are restricting the enjoyment of human rights,” the High Commissioner said.</p>
<p>GENEVA (23 January 2013) - The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay expressed Wednesday her deep concern about the verdict and extremely harsh sentencing of the editor and prominent activist Somyot Pruksakasemsuk, adding that this represents a setback for the protection and promotion of human rights in Thailand.</p>

<p>GENEVA (18 September 2012)– UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay on Tuesday welcomed the release of the final report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Thailand (TRCT) on the 2010 political violence as a positive step to advance accountability and reconciliation among different segments of Thai society.

<p>GENEVA – The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay on Wednesday hailed the coming into force of a landmark new human rights treaty designed to deter the practice of enforced disappearance, punish its practitioners and protect its victims. After Iraq became the 20th State to ratify the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance on 23 November 2010, it will officially come into force 30 days later on 23 December 2010.</p>
<p>The concept of non-discrimination lies at the heart of human rights.</p>
<p>For this reason, it has been designated the official theme of this Human Rights Day, which occurs every year on the anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948. And for this and many other reasons it should be an unofficial theme every day, every year, for everyone. </p>
