A District Court has confirmed that the Military Court has jurisdiction over trials of anti-junta activists charged with violating the junta’s political gathering ban, saying the junta has successfully gained control of the country since the coup d’état. The Military Court of Bangkok on Tuesday, 7 June 2016, held a deposition hearing for Natchacha Kongudom, an anti-junta youth activist indicted for violating the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) Head’s Order No. 3/2015.  The order prohibits any political gathering of five or more persons.

Thai police have detained 16 activists for standing still to show solidarity with 10 persons abducted earlier by the military. One of the 16 was later taken away by the military after the arrest. Police officers at about 6:30 pm on Wednesday, 27 April 2016, arrested 16 people for gathering at the Victory Monument in Bangkok and standing still to show solidarity with 10 people abducted by the military on Wednesday morning.

The police on Wednesday morning arrested Natchacha Kongudom, a transgender student activist, after she was admitted to hospital.    Natchacha, 21, is one of the eight students wanted on an arrest warrant for violating the junta’s order when they attempted to commemorate the first anniversary of the coup d’état on 22 May.    Natchacha was admitted to Vibhavadi Hospital.

At least 34 people arrested on Friday evening for commemorating the coup were released without charge, on condition that they stop political activities. However, student activists in Khon Kaen face charges and were released on 7,500 baht bail.   The first arrests occurred about 6 pm after a group of students gathered at the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC), Siam Square.

In November 2014, a transgender student activist was arrested and briefly detained for flashing a three-fingered salute at the ‘Hunger Games 3’ movie premiere in central Bangkok as a symbolic protest against the junta. Since then, she has become one of the best-known figures in the political movement against the junta. In a bid to stop the political activities of student activists, military officers have intimidated 17 student activists by paying visits to their homes, dorms, and parent’s homes. The Thai Student Centre for Democracy (TSCD), a student activist group, on Wednesday revealed on the group’s Facebook page that since 19 March, 17 student activists have been intimidated by military officers who came to visit their homes.

Military officers intimidated and threatened to detain two anti-junta student activists while the police visited the dormitory of one of the two.    Natchacha Kongudom, an anti-junta student activist from Bangkok University, told Prachatai on Friday that military officers threatened to send her to an ‘attitude adjustment camp’ at a seminar she attended on Wednesday. Later in the evening, several police officers came to her dormitory to search for her, but she was absent.
