Under the 2026 budget bill, while there has been no significant change in direct spending allocated to the monarchy, indirect expenditures in the 2026 budget are 4,123 billion baht higher than last year, making the monarchy-related budget the highest in seven years. Meanwhile, questions relating to monarchy budget is met with restraint.

Student activist and monarchy reform advocate Nutthanit “Baipor” Duangmusit has been sentenced to 4 years in prison on charges of royal defamation and violation of the Computer Crimes Act for 2 Facebook posts from 2022 about the budget allocated to the monarchy.

The House of Representatives on Wednesday (28 May) passed in three consecutive readings the new Crown Property bill, which renames the Crown Property Bureau as the “Privy Purse Bureau,” and to transfer the related offices in the Bureau of the Royal Household to the renamed Office.

Of the 3.48 trillion baht national budget, the government had allocated 36.19 billion baht for expenditures relating to the monarchy. Though its share of the overall budget decreased slightly from 2023, total expenditure rose by 1.5 billion baht to 36.2 billion, the second highest in five years. Meanwhile, some projects previously associated with the monarchy by name or purpose have lost any linkage, a development which the opposition saw as progress. There is also a rise in the budget for public relations.

The government is proposing to allocate a budget of over 8.4 billion baht to the Royal Offices, according to a budget document released by the Budget Bureau on 26 December 2023.
