The posterchild of the democracy movement in Thailand, detained for lèse majesté, has won the prestigious Gwangju Prize for Human Rights. The selection committee of the South Korean May 18 Memorial Foundation announced that Jatuphat ‘Pai’ Boonpattararaksa, a law student and key member of the New Democracy Movement (NDM), is the winner of the 2017 Gwangju Prize for Human Rights.

 Thailand’s state Mahidol University should drop a disciplinary investigation against academics who criticized the Thai military junta, Human Rights Watch said today. The action is being carried out against staff members of the Institute of Human Rights and Peace Studies (IHRP), Southeast Asia’s longest-running graduate degree program in human rights studies.

Mahidol University has censured its human rights institute for demanding the junta cease its use of Article 44. The demand came after a follower of the Dhammakaya sect committed suicide to protest the junta’s ongoing harassment of the temple.

Academics say that the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO), the formal name of the Thai junta, has violated its own rule book in harassing critics of the junta-sponsored draft constitution. Academics of the Institute of Human Rights and Peace Studies (IHRP) of Mahidol University on Wednesday, 27 April 2016, held a briefing on the authorities’ actions in persecuting and intimidating people for criticizing the draft constitution written by the junta-appointed Constitution Drafting Committee (CDC).

Thai military officers have visited academics the 14 embattled anti-junta activists to ask about their political stance.   Bencharat Sae Chua, a lecturer of the Institute of Human Rights and Peace Studies of Mahidol University (IHRP), told Prachatai Thai that on Wednesday, 8 July 2015, five military officers came to the university to ask her and other lecturers about their political stance and whether they support the 14 anti-junta activists, who have been temporarily released.
