A Thai Criminal Court has convicted a former Thai marine who shot and killed Cambodian opposition politician Lim Kimya and sentenced him to life in prison. The assassination was seen as politically motivated and made clear that Thailand is no safe haven for political dissidents.

During a meeting of the House Committee on National Security, relevant stakeholders discussed a leaked audio clip linked to Hun Sen’s order to target Cambodian refugees in Thailand. Two Cambodian refugees said they were pursued after fleeing to Thailand, while the National Security Council acknowledged the existence of intelligence operations, but could not confirm whether they involved state-to-state collaboration.

The ASEAN Parliamentarians for Human Rights (APHR) condemns, in the strongest possible terms, the assassination of former Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) Member of Parliament, Lim Kimya, who was tragically shot dead in Bangkok on 7 January 2024.
