The Thai government's plan for a carbon credit programme to achieve carbon neutrality has raised concerns among the civil society that it will lead to a new wave of conflict over land rights and that forest area will be handed over to the private sector.

The evidence examination hearing for a class action lawsuit filed by Cambodian farmers against the sugar company Mitr Phol for the damages caused by its sugar plantation project has been postponed to March 2024 to allow both parties to collect and translate documents to be used in the trial.

Yesterday (6 November), the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) and Amnesty International (AI) jointly submitted an amicus curiae legal brief to the Bangkok South Civil Court calling on the court to apply international human rights standards in a class action lawsuit filed by Cambodian farmers against the Thai sugar company Mitr Phol for alleged human rights abuses by its apparent subsidiary in Cambodia.

In 2008, the Cambodian government granted Economic Land Concessions to three subsidiaries of the Thai company Mitr Phol, one of the largest sugar producers in the world. To make way for a sugarcane plantation, Cambodian farmers were forced off their land, police set fire to homes, and some residents were imprisoned. Now, over 700 families are seeking justice by filing against Mitr Phol what is said to be the first transboundary class action human rights lawsuit in Thailand.

The People's Movement for a Just Society (P-Move) has ended a 15-day protest in front of Government House after several sub-committees were formed to handle community rights issues and demands made by the activists.

Last Friday (6 October), activists from the People’s Movement for a Just Society (P-Move) went to the Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre (QSNCC), where the 2023 Thailand Climate Action Conference is taking place, to protest government policies that would greenwash the country’s major corporations while worsening inequality.

The People’s Movement for a Just Society (P-Move) has declared that it will be occupying the street in front of Government House to demand a fairer policy for land rights, community rights, welfare, freedom, and democracy. They have vowed not to leave until the cabinet passes resolutions guaranteeing their demands.

On Monday (4 September), members of indigenous communities in Lampang marched to the Ngao District Office in Lampang to protest the declaration of a new national park in the area due to the concerns that their lands would be taken over by the park.

<p>The &quot;Forest Reclamation Policy,&rdquo; led to regulations to stop encroachment on forest resources in 2014. Enforcement resulted in more than 46,000 villagers around the country being arrested and sued. &nbsp;Most were villagers who lived on, or had land plots that overlapped with, forest preserve areas in various ways.</p>

<p>Indigenous Karen communities from Samoeng District, Chiang Mai, filed a petition on Tuesday (11 October) to oppose the designation of forest land as part of Ob Khan National Park, as the land includes their community forest and spiritual area.</p>

<p>The indigenous Hmong community on Mon Jam, a mountain in Chiang Mai&rsquo;s Mae Rim District and now a famous tourist destination, staged a protest on Monday (29 August) to block forestry officials from demolishing their houses and homestays.</p>

<p>Community rights and indigenous rights activists in Chiang Mai were blocked by crowd control police today (24 August) during their march to submit a petition to an APEC leaders meeting at the Le Meridien Hotel.</p>
