<p>Two monarchy reform activists have had their bail revoked yesterday (9 January) after the Criminal Court ruled that they had violated their bail conditions by joining an anti-government protest during the APEC summit in November 2022.</p>

<p>On 4 August, the South Bangkok Criminal Court granted bail for monarchy reform activists Nutthanit and Netiporn, who have been held in pre-trial detention on royal defamation charges for 94 days. Meanwhile, a traditional Thai dancer-turned-activist, has been arrested.</p>

<p>A hardline royalist activist launched a legal action on Monday against an opposition party for voicing concern during a recent parliamentary debate over the indiscriminate use of the royal defamation law.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Monarchy reform activists Nutthanit and Netiporn, who are being held in pre-trial detention on royal defamation charges, have once again been denied bail despite being hospitalized after collapsing during a witness examination hearing from severe pain and fatigue from their hunger strike.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.hrw.org/thailand">Thai</a>&nbsp;authorities should immediately&nbsp;drop the charges and&nbsp;release&nbsp;pro-democracy activists detained&nbsp;for&nbsp;insulting the monarchy&nbsp;(lese majeste), <a href="https://www.hrw.org/news/2022/07/19/thailand-free-detained-critics-monarchy">Human Rights Watch </a>said today&nbsp;(19 July).</p>

<p>On 7 July, the Southern Bangkok Criminal Court denied bail to Netiporn Sanesangkhom and Natthanit (surname withheld), monarchy reform activists who have been detained pending trial. After 36 days of hunger strike, both are exhibiting signs of seriously deteriorating health.</p>

<p>An open letter from University of Wisconsin-Madison Professor Tyrell Haberkorn, and Emeritus Professor Thongchai Winichakul to the Southern Criminal Court, reminding the need to uphold the presumption of innocence and freedom of expression, regarding the detention of two monarchy reform activists who are currently going on a hunger strike.</p>

<p>The activist group 24 June Democracy has demanded that the Ministry of Justice investigate a prison doctor&rsquo;s alleged harassment of Nutthanit (last name withheld), or &ldquo;Baipor,&rdquo; a monarchy reform activist currently detained pending trial on a royal defamation charge, while the Department of Corrections claims no harassment took place.</p>

<p>Amnesty International has launched an urgent action campaign calling for the release of Baipor and Netiporn, two monarchy reform activists currently held in pre-trial detention on royal defamation charges and who are on a hunger strike to demand the right to bail.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Four monarchy reform activists were again denied bail on 20 May, including Tantawan Tuatulanon, who has been on a hunger strike for the past 32&nbsp;days to demand the right to bail, while a protest caravan visited the Ratchadaphisek Criminal Court and the Bangkok Remand Prison to demand the release of 11 detained activists.</p>

<p>In a new surge of detentions, six people are in jail in connection with the royal defamation law &ndash; five of them denied bail to contest the charges outside prison. A human rights lawyer said the move illustrates the authorities&rsquo; obsession with smothering any public criticism of the monarchy.&nbsp;</p>

<p>7 out of 9 activists who pleaded by the police for temporary detention for surveying public perceptions of royal motorcades have been released on bail.</p>
