Pro-democracy activists and lecturers visited a well-known anti-junta activist from Isaan, Thailand’s northeast, who has been stricken with a fever after more than a week of hunger striking behind bars. Chaturapat Boonyapatraksa, 25 and a youth activist from the New Democracy Movement (NDM), is being detained at Phu Khiao District Prison in the Isaan province of Chaiyaphum. Around 40 lecturers from Naresuan University and activists from Dao Din, a youth activist group based in Khon Kaen University, visited Chaturapat on Monday, 15 August 2016.

Contradicting the Minister of Justice, the Thai National Human Rights Commission has concluded that shackling political dissidents is a violation of human rights. What Tingsamitr, Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), on Tuesday, 9 August 2016, concluded that the use of shackles by the Department of Corrections (DC) on detained political activists from the New Democracy Movement (NDM) violates human rights and dignity, the Manager Online reported.

A well-known anti-junta activist from Isaan, Thailand’s northeast, arrested one day before the referendum, has vowed not to request bail and to go on hunger strike to point out the broken justice system in Thailand. The Provincial Court of the northeastern province of Chaiyaphum on Monday, 8 August 2016, granted permission to the police to detain Chaturapat Boonyapatraksa, 25, and Wasin Prommanee, 20, youth activists from the New Democracy Movement (NDM).

After unsuccessfully trying to bar anti-junta youth activists from holding a talk on the upcoming referendum on the junta-sponsored draft charter, university staff have accused the activists of breaking the controversial Referendum Act.

After the deputy junta head promised to organise nationwide debates on the controversial draft charter, a well-known anti-junta activist group challenged the junta-appointed constitution drafters to a debate. At 12:30 pm on Thursday, 21 July 2016, Chanoknan Ruamsap, key member of the New Democracy Movement (NDM), an anti-junta activist group, and other NDM members submitted an invitation letter to Amorn Wanichwiwatana, spokesperson of the Constitution Drafting Committee (CDC).

After a stand-off with anti-junta activists over leaflets criticising the junta-sponsored draft charter, the Thai authorities say that the leaflets cannot be distributed as they distort facts about the draft. Somchai Srisuthiyakorn, of the Election Commission of Thailand (ECT), on Thursday afternoon, 14 July 2016, told the media after a meeting with the Constitution Drafting Committee (CDC) that leaflets entitled ‘7 Reasons Not to Accept the Draft Constitution’ are not allowed to be distributed.

The Justice Minister has justified the use of shackles on student activists, asking rights defenders what would they do if unshackled prisoners escape, while a junta spokesperson said the use of shackles depended on officials’ personal discretion.      Although the seven activists from the New Democracy Movement were already released, they have left criticism against Thailand’s justice system as the pictures of them being shackled by chain were widely spread throughout the media.

After the Military Court ordered the release of seven democracy activists on Tuesday, only six have been freed. At around 8:30 am on Wednesday, 6 July 2016, the Department of Corrections released six of the seven democracy activists accused of violating the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) Head’s Order No. 3/2015, the junta’s ban on political gatherings of five or more persons, and the controversial Referendum Act for distributing campaign flyers on the upcoming draft constitution referendum.

The Military Court has released the seven embattled democracy activists after detaining them for nearly two weeks. The Military Court of Bangkok at around 3:30 pm on Tuesday, 5 July 2016, refused the police permission to detain the seven activists, most of whom are affiliated with the New Democracy Movement (NDM): Rangsiman Rome, Korakoch Saengyenpan, Thirayut Napnaram, Somsakol Thongsuksai, Yuttana Dasri, Nantapong Panmat and Anan Loket. According to officers from the Department of Corrections, the seven will be released on Wednesday morning.
