Doctors criticise regressive healthcare reforms

The Rural Doctors’ Association (RDA) has criticised the junta’s plans to amend the National Health Security Act, arguing it has overlooked the interests of the people.   On 12 June 2017, the RDA released a statement lambasting the Ministry of Public Health (MOPH) for turning its back on past commitments to universal health.   The junta’s proposed revisions to the National Health Security Act threaten to abolish Thailand’s universal healthcare, also known as the "Gold Card" medical scheme.

Survey shows inequalities in women, children’s health by socioeconomic status, location, ethnicity

The Fifth Wave of the Unicef Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS) on women and children’s health was administered by the Thai National Statistical Office (NSO) in 2015-2016, with the main report being published earlier this year. The survey illustrates how children and young people living in remote and rural areas, children from poor households, and children whose parents have low levels of education are falling behind in health, education, and overall development.

Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health has included more than half a million more people in the free public healthcare system as of October 2015. According to Post Today News, Surapong Kongchantuk, Chair of the Lawyers Council of Thailand's Human Rights Subcommittee on Ethnic Minorities, the Stateless, Migrant Workers and the Displaced, revealed on Thursday, 1 October 2015, that 626,027 more people will now be able to enjoy the same free public healthcare that all Thai citizens are entitled to.
