If the face is the mirror of a soul, then what should reflect one’s who is or is believed to be in trance or possessed by spirits? The exhibition to be held on 18-25 February at SEA Junction is an attempt by the photographer Eva Rapoport to find answers to this question.

After years of battle over land rights, an embattled indigenous seafarer community in Phuket has won a lawsuit filed against them by a land development company. On 31 January 2017, the Provincial Court of Phuket read the verdict on a dispute over the 33 rai plot on Rawai Beach of Phuket between an indigenous seafarer community and Baron World Trade Co, a real estate development company.

Burmese authorities should urgently provide information on the whereabouts and well-being of two ethnic Kachin Baptist leaders who were apparently forcibly disappeared in Northern Shan State, Human Rights Watch and Fortify Rights said today. Langjaw Gam Seng, 35, and Dumdaw Nawng Lat, 65, who had guided journalists reporting on Burmese airstrikes that allegedly severely damaged a Catholic church, were last seen on December 24, 2016 traveling to a military base.

During the two-day media development conference, the Southeast Asian Press Alliance (SEAPA) met with Khun Yar Zar, founder and editor in chief of the People’s Voice Journal based in Taunggyi, Shan State. It’s his third time joining the media conference, which was held at the Chatrium Hotel in Yangon this year.

A provincial court in northern Thailand has found three ethnic Lahu villagers guilty of encroaching on a national park and offences against authorities.    On 27 September 2016, Fang Provincial Court sentenced three ethnic Lahu: Withun Khiriratsami, Pra-ae Khiriratsami and Chakui Chabalo. The three were accused of encroaching on Doi Pha Hom Pok National Park and of assaulting park rangers.    Withun faces a one year and two month suspended jail term and 4,500 baht fine.

The Thai Administrative Court has ruled that national park officers did not break the law in burning the houses of members of the Karen ethnic minority in Kaeng Krachan National Park.

After being banned in Myanmar a month ago, the film ‘Twilight Over Burma’ has also been banned from an upcoming film festival in Bangkok. The festival organizers said the film might endanger Thailand-Myanmar relations.   On Wednesday, 6 July 2016, Matichon Online reported that ‘Twilight Over Burma’, the love story of an ethnic Shan prince and an Austrian woman during a period of political unrest in Myanmar, was removed from the 4th Thailand International Film Destination Festival 2016.

A Provincial Court in northern Thailand has acquitted a Hmong man accused by national park officers of encroaching into a protected area. Thai Lawyers for Human Rights (TLHR) reported that the Provincial Court of the northern province of Mae Hong Son on Wednesday, 25 May 2016, acquitted Su Wangpoh, a 58-year-old Hmong from Pai District of the province.

Brief skirmishes between a group of unidentified individuals and an embattled community of sea nomadshave reportedly erupted again in the presence of public officials. Maitree Jongkraijug, a citizen journalist, reported that at about 1 pm on Wednesday, 25 May 2016, a large group of unidentified individuals equipped with an excavator used big rocks to block the entrance to a disputed land plot on Rawai beach of the southern province of Phuket.

The former chief of a National Park has been appointed head of a new park protection unit despite the fact that he is the prime suspect in the enforced disappearance of a Karen rights activist. The Daily News reported on Tuesday, 3 May 2016, that Thanya Netithamkul, Director-General of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP), announced that the Department recently established a new forest and wildlife protection unit called the Tiger Corps Operation Unit.
