A Military Court in northern Thailand has detained 10 people, including a former Member of Parliament for Chiang Mai, accused of sedition over letters criticising the junta-sponsored draft constitution.
The Chiang Mai Military Court on Thursday, 4 August 2016, granted the police permission to remand in custody Tassanee Buranupakorn, former Pheu Thai Party MP for Chiang Mai, Boonlert Buranupakorn, former chief of the Chiang Mai Provincial Administrative Organisation, Khachen Jiakkhajorn, mayor of Chang Phueak Subdistrict of the province.

When the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) announced the “3 part road map” in June 2014, it indicated that restrictions on rights put in place following the 22 May 2014 coup would be temporary. In the immediate aftermath of the coup, and on several occasions since, Amnesty International has raised concerns that - even as temporary measures - many of these restrictions amount to human rights violations and as such are unacceptable.

A man in Isaan, northeastern Thailand, has been sent for a psychological examination over a ‘no vote’ campaign while policemen raided another northeasterner’s home over a ‘vote no’ t-shirt.
Police officers of Phibun Mangsahan District in Ubon Ratchathani Province on Tuesday, 26 July 2016, arrested Wichan Phuwihan, a 48-year-old man from Bangkok, at the district market.
Wichan was arrested for shouting at people not to turn up for the 7 August public referendum on the draft constitution.

The Thai police have arrested a northerner suspected of sending thousands of anti-draft charter letters after the military detained his parents.
Police officers from the Crime Suppression Division (CSD) on Saturday afternoon, 23 July 2016, arrested Wisarut Khunnitisan, 38, from a condominium in Bangkok and flew him to the northern province of Chiang Mai.

Following the announcement of the NCPO that the Constitutional Referendum is to be held on August 7, various groups have expressed their views on Thailand’s draft constitution. Both pro- and anti-draft groups have been running campaigns and expressing their views in public. Unfortunately, however, the NCPO has not been welcoming of the views of both groups.
